How Sun & Shadow began

I learned to embroider as a schoolgirl in Brazil, and I never really stopped looking for things to stitch. One day I picked up my own hats — plain, forgettable ones — and started embroidering them. What came back surprised me: they had become something else entirely.

I shared a few photos with friends. Almost immediately they started asking me to do theirs. That was the beginning. I began sourcing hats and giving each one its own character, and Sun & Shadow was born.

Making things with my hands has always been how I think. I work in ceramics too, and I'm forever chasing the next object, the next idea. Now, from my studio on the Gold Coast, I'm bringing that Brazilian sensibility to Australia — the same restlessness, the same pleasure in turning something ordinary into something worth keeping.
